A New Theme Song for RWYS??

At retreat. . .the girls of the "Parrot" room rewrote a famous song and performed it for us on the last morning. The melody is to "The Battle Hymn of the Republic" . . . .perhaps we should adopt this as our theme song. Thanks gals. You are great.
The words go like this:
Mine eyes have seen the glory of the sewing of the quilt
Let the spouse and kids go hungry, we will never feel the guilt
Let the housework go to blazes and the trees and flowers wilt
As we go quilting on....
Glory, glory, halelujah
Glory, glory, halelujah
Glory, glory, halelujah
As we go quilting on.

IMPERFECT QUILTER - ROTARY MATS

While at RWYS retreat, Nadine Arney, shared a tip on how to revitalize your rotary mat. Since these mats are expensive....anything that can make them last a little longer is very helpful. Thus, here is how it is done:

To clean your OLFA mat, use a generous amount of ROOM temperature water and a few drop of mild detergent. Soaking it in the tub for about 10 - 15 minutes will help to re-hydrate it. Use a soft, mild bristle brush such as a toothbrush or mushroom brush (did you know there was such a thing???) and create a lather and gently clean your mat. Rinse it with room temperature water and wipe it dry with a cotton towel. Please note that warm or hot water, and direct sunlight might damage the mat. Dry it and store it FLAT. To keep fibers from getting caught in surface, use a lint roller after each cutting session.

Ramblings, continued

I'm still new at this and accidentally published before I edited.....I really can count. I know some of you wonder sometimes.... my edit would have been to identify THREE of my favorite books, not TWO.

Ramblings from the Imperfect Quilter

Good morning to all of you....
Just thought I would take a moment and share a couple of my favorite books and tell you why I use these so much. You might want to look for them on Amazon...used books....or check out "quilter's dump" sales....ever been to one? These are fun and perhaps we should have a true "dump" sale where we bring in fabric, books, extra notions that we want to shed. Any takers on helping set this up? This would be different from the auction where anything is game...this would be only for quilting stuff. Let me know if you would like to do a DUMP SALE.
Ah......but, I digress. Here are two of my very favorite books:
1. Measure the Possibilities with Omnigrid, by Nancy Johnson-Srebro - great reference book for using your rotary cutter. Learn to cut almost any shape with this book.
2. Quilter's Complete Guide, by Fons and Porter. This is truly a quilting "bible". While we have advanced in some things...this book is a solid, tried and true reference book.
3. 40 Faboulous Quick-Cut Quilts, by Evelyn Sloppy (what a name, huh?), but another great book with good quilts and excellent instructions.
Please share with me.....some of your favorite books.

Imperfect Quilter

Good morning,
I told you that I would start putting up some quilting tips and/or answering some questions about various topics related to quilting. So here goes the first of what will, hopefully, become a steady stream. In order to do this, I need you to help...so post your comments, questions, etc. Thank You.

My thought this morning deals with the ROTARY MATS!!!

When was the last time you purchased a new mat? Does your mat collect fuzz in the cracks? When you run your hand over the mat, is it smooth, or do you feel the cuts. While these mats are very durable, they do wear out and will definitely impede your ability to get accurate cuts. For each groove you feel, you can bet you might be off as much as 1/64 of an inch. While that doesn't sound like a lot....multiply that by 64 seams and you are off by 1". So, bite the bullet...purchase a new mat .... of course, on sale....and it won't be nearly as painful.

Are some mats better than others....it is personal choice, but I can tell you one that is really a lousy mat and it is those white ones with blue lines sold at the Craft Fairs. They are wonderful in that they offer a variety of cool sizes......but as to their durability, they are lousy. They are not made for serious cuts. Personal favorites....Olfa and Fiskars mats. The Gingher mat is nifty in that it is truly 2 sided. Wear it out on one side and simply turn it over. They are, however, more expensive, but you get twice the cutting from them.

By the way, don't throw your old mat away...turn it over and use it to cut curve pieces or protect your table tops and let the kids paint, putter and paste to their hearts content.

Until next time,
Your Imperfect Quilter

April Showers of Blessings

They say wE are supposed to have showers in April…well, in the Arizona, we measure our April showers by blessings. RWYS has been so blessed this Year with all of the new membErs and everyone’s wIllingness to work on various projects. ThaNk you all.

This meeting, we will have our “Mystery Clue” and I have snaGGed a couple of new notions that I look Forward to sharing with you. A coupLe of these are truly innovative. Also, we will be bleSsed by “Sew’nTell” time. One more thing, short of sounding like a brokEn record….please, please return any labels you have taken home to cut. Thank you.

A note from Sandy

ATTENTION!!!
LABELS: Again, we are requesting that those who took home labels to cut, please, return them as soon as possible. You can turn them into Cindy Sims at the church office. Thank you so much for cutting them, but we are in "desperate need" of the labels.
POOL PATCH: Also, please note the following correction to the Pool Patch (Butterfly Block)....on the front side under cutting, where you are asked to cut 2" "E" squares from the background fabric, this should read "E- 2-1/2" square .... in the directions on the back, the correct measurement is given, but since few of us read the directions before we cut.....thought you might need to know this.
Thank you all so much.

Blessings to you,

Sandy
